Biography
Richard Carr (b.1987, Dublin) currently lives and works in both Dublin and Wexford. Carr has established himself as one of Ireland’s leading young artists exhibiting alongside Bill Viola at PERIPHERIES 2014 with his work selected to feature in Aesthetica Magazine, UK. He was shortlisted for the Arte Laguna Prize, Arsenale Venice (2015) as well as BEERS Contemporary and Ireland’s Emerging Visual Artist Award (2014). His MFA work A Listening Speech was selected by art critic James Merrigan as one of the top postgraduate projects in the country (2013). In the same year his work was selected as one the highlights of the Irish Sound, Science and Technology Convocation by La Cosa Preziosa of the ISSTA. He graduated with a first class BA hons (2009), Wexford Campus - IT Carlow and with his MFA (2013), the National College of Art & Design, Dublin.
Carr has had his work included in shows at MOMA/Kunsten, Denmark, SOMA Contemporary, Soundfjord London, PERIPHERIES Centre, the Irish Museum of Contemporary Art, Dublin among others. Currently Carr is the Paul Funge Artist in Residence at the PERIPHERIES Centre for Creative Development, Gorey School of Art and is due to open his solo show Play it by Ear at Soma Contemporary, Waterford City later this year.
Carr has also been very active in the larger national and international art community working closely on world class exhibitions including the work of Haroon Mirza, Duncan Campbell, Cerith Wyn Evans, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Peter Doig, Eileen Gray, Allen Ruppersberg, Ed Ruscha, Simon Fujiwara, Sheela Gowda and Danh Vo with Rachael Thomas; Senior Curator & Head of Exhibitions & Sean Kissane; Curator of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Annie Fletcher; Curator of Exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and tutor at De Appel, Amsterdam and Vaari Claffey; Independent curator, Dublin.
