Biography
Fabrizio Bellanca was born in Rome in 1968. He earned a diploma from one of the city’s artistic high schools in 1987, moved to Milan where he attended the Istituto Superiore
di Grafica Pubblicitaria del Castello Sforzesco, and graduated in 1991. His first approach into the art world, in 1989, was an elaboration upon the concept of urban graffiti that was distinguished by a blend of styles, abstract letters and colours. Graffiti first appeared
in New York at the end of the 1960s,in Manhattan and Brooklyn.Young African Americans and Hispanics from those boroughs were the first to cover walls with stylised
graffiti of names and nicknames, a style that then developed into a contemporary art form.
Since 1996 his painting has progressed, taking on new forms and techniques including action painting using oil-based paints on various surfaces. Currently he is experimenting with the juxtaposition of art and computer-based imagery through research of new techniques and forms of expression that range from the figurative to the abstract, the use of various materials including sheets of steel that are etched with a drill, which has resulted in the genesis of the musical/artistic performance group Blue Silk. In his recent works the steel sheets have been cut with lasers and inserted with neon lights to become artistic and useful objects such as a lamp/picture frame and portrait/lamp, providing a double function to his works.
Fabrizio Bellanca was one of the founding members of the Artist’s Group “Nova Configurazione”.
He lives and works in Como where he owns “Fab”, a graphic design firm specialising in corporate identity and image work, desktop
publishing and web-site design.
