Biography
Martina Gleeson is a practicing painter and Illustrator from Limerick, Ireland. She graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Painting from the Limerick School of Art and Design in 2014. She was awarded the Tom Fox Bursary award for painting in 2014. She then went on to complete a bursary with the Limerick Printmakers and had a solo exhibition in Limerick city in 2015. Martina then went on to complete an MA in illustration in the UK 2015-2016. Martina is currently practising as a both a painter and freelance illustrator. She recently won the 'Design a Gift Card' competition for One 4 All gift cards which will see her design sold in post offices and online through out Ireland in 2018. Martina hopes to move to London this September.
Martina makes work about the human condition. She uses dry humour and unguarded honesty to produce both her paintings and illustrations. Martina's work focuses on bringing forward the often overlooked situations that man kind find themselves in and amplifying their occurrence, from topical current events to shared memories of childhood, our teenage years and young adulthood. She explores personal scenarios and attempts to relate them to the personal scenarios of the viewer. Martina's main objectives as an artist is to make work that is relatable and to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
