SYNTOPIC SALON - Interdisciplinary Urban Interface
The “SYNTOPIC SALON” Project enhances and presents since 2009 inter,- and transdisciplinary work structures aiming an exchange between art and science within the Heart of Munich, Germany.
The SYNTOPIC SALON projects are intervening close to Munich central train station area. This area is especially shaped through decades by the arriving people and visitors, therefore the usual coming and going of hotel guests but also mixed with the very bavarian traditional infrastructure; university clinics, book stores and turkish groceries form a unique sociocultural meltingpot within Munich. Therefore the special atmosphere around the SYNTOPIC SALON at Goethestreet 31 always randomly attracts visitors, locals and invited guests. The activities curated since 2008 by an Architect, a Physician and an Art Scientist reflect on this unique situation.
The experiment SYNTOPIC SALON has an open exit.
The upcoming and past activities of the SYNTOPIC SALON are accompanied by our blog: www.syntopischersalon.de
SYNTOPY
With its interdisciplinary approach the SYNTOPIC SALON was build on the concept of "Syntopy" - the holistic recognition, communication and visualization of certain subcultures and people.
Syntopy states in general that two places that were not connected before are brought together by - the curators - the selected artists – scientists – and spectators in one place. The result is a special environment for something new, often unexpected ... The SYNTOPIC SALON wants to be a flexible place for Syntopia, were different ideas, people coming from different places, viewpoints can meet. Therefore the shape of the Salon is also made flexible; it can be used as a platform, a frame or as a small cubicle studio. The term “Syntopy” was inspired by Prof. Dr. Ernst Poeppel, while working over 30 years in Neuroscience at the Institute of Medical Psychology in Goethestreet 31 at the University of Munich. Syntopy and creativity are intertwined because the interaction and exchange of different disciplines almost always frees again some new ideas and enhances tolerance.
THE LAB, THE WING CHAIR, THE SITE
The Syntopic Laboratory facilities are located on the site of Ludwig Maximilian University in Goethestreet 31 - at the interface with public space. It creates the possibility of participation of the district.
The Building behind THE SALON is hosting Departments of Immunology, Pharmacology, Medical Psychology and its traditional campus life should be an input for interdisciplinary processes bringing science to the public and vice versa. The transparent cubicle is surrounded by very old trees and in front there is one of the biggest Turkish bakeries in Munich.
THE LAB is a transparent cubicle, 3.3 x 2.5 x 2.5 meters wide, flexible and transportable by truck.
The LAB should be both a showcase for experimentation and even part of the process. The Lab is open all year, day and night.
The WING CHAIR refers to the open space which could be used by the public. It is an open invitation to sit down comfortably and let the spirit fly in the tradition of the historical SALON concept, which also brought together artists, debates and viewpoints. The wing chair brings the interior to the outside, he was chosen to represent the SYNTOPIC SALON at other cultural places in Munich and all activities and interventions placed in the cubicle took advantage of him.
While planning the SYNTOPIC SALON the curators had the concept of processwork in mind, the architectural shell could be adapted to the wishes and ideas of the presenter. Here is the city a place for people, directly shaped by people to their needs not by buildings.
THE SITE of Syntopic SALON is inspired by the idea of preserving GAPs in the city. The appropriate mailbox address in Goethestreet 31 in Munich is: g.a.p.-ground. The curators took advantage of such a urban gap and its use by the public.
Due to the temporary urban intervention of flexible translucent laboratory and wing chair this special "gap” in the urban space" is made visible. The activities of SYNTOPIC SALON at this place embedded in the global context of connectivity to other urban places – gaps- cities- where similar interdisciplinary and urban stimuli are possible and tolerated are a main part and goal of the project.
