Here is it somewhere else?
a sense of déjà-vu
In Shanghai, for an occidental alien , this feeling of somewhere else should be expected. Yet after few days it doesn’t really stay. On a contrary, a lingering sense of déjà-vu appears. I have thought to recognize some situations, some places or area as familiar, even if i knew that it was impossible because it was my first time in Shanghai and also in Asia.
This feeling of as seen before could be accompanied by impression of strangeness and even of unreality. The new seems common nay banal, maybe due to a folk memory or a collective
representation broadcasted by information media such as Internet. The exotism we are looking for in some faraway countries is gone. Finally, the alterity is more familiar than we would like to
expect turning it in some kind of cliché.
For the exhibition, I propose a set of works about this sense of déjà-vu related with the architecture field and the different construction shapes that i have met during my walks (skyline, moucharabieh, radiating plan). I decided to use these visual forms on different supports linked at the Chinese culture but not only (bowl, silk, sack or baggage). We find them all around the world, in our world village, but just with other details.
Each work propose a kind of urban landscape where every one can have his own reading, his own drift or maybe just have an other point of view about common things.
