From 1839 and throughout the ‘800 photography has not been able to reach a position of complete independence in the arts, and again in 900, many photographers have borrowed from painting style sone elements that have made it increasingly difficult to find the right place for this new instrument of Art and its "results".
Just in the last century the conscience of all the methodological issues related to the shape have given it an identity that should be concreted by binding mainly to the question of content, driven and benefited from the avant-garde innovations taking place in other artistic fields (e.g. the ready-made and the new attention developed into the "concept" rather than into the "technique").
Today the historical analysis and a new critical consciousness make us get more easily to the conclusion that the photographic medium is fully and independently, a part of the history of contemporary art, with lots of debates and divergent views raised by the peculiarities of the medium and experiments undertaken up to now.
"Biancoferro", a project that collects forty shots captured in Calamita and Ginevro mines by photographer Filippo Lenzi, then is not a detailed account of a territorial entity with unique characteristics: but the interpretation of art, created through the photographic medium, as a space that has an experience in itself, a story, a journey.
Protagonists of the shots are the mines of Capoliveri, a small town located in the south of the island, rich in deposits of iron and therefore an important resource depository since the time of the ancient Etruscans.
Unchallenged industrial architecture inspected by every corner of the eye of the artist and often raised in connection with another key component of the territory: the sea.
Water is the frame in a superb style, a choice of black and white through which Filippo Lenzi tells a memory.
As the dust of iron has crossed the lines of the miners, so now salt covers the mineral, and gets it back.
Rust as a memory, oxidation as a change and an exachange.
From these relationships develops the creative impulse of the artist who, through the use of black and white, traces the history of a place and its own.
The picturesqueness of the colors used and the absence of a formal balance in the choice of perspective are the key features of his work.
Filippo Lenzi in fact does not submit his works to the stylistic rules of the language of photography but fosters a creative experience born from an intriguing imbalance difficult to access.
