Exhibit of drawing, graphics, painting and sculpture of Danielle Villicana D’Annibale
Saturday, December 1, 2012, at 6:00pm, at the Villicana D’Annibale Galleria D’Arte of via Cavour 57 (Arezzo) will inaugurate the exhibit of drawing, graphics, painting and sculpture by Danielle Villicana D’Annibale, entitled American Spirit.
The exposition, curated by Michele Loffredo, will host a selection of approximately twenty works which represent the journey of the Californian artist from the beginning until today. The exhibit will continue at free entrance until Tuesday, December 11, 2012.
Two collateral events: Friday, December 7, at 6pm, the American will be interviewed by Igino Materazzi, expert in contemporary art. Tuesday, December 11, at 6pm, the closing party of the solo exhibition and the second birthday of the gallery will be celebrated with a concert of piano. The American artist and maestro Franco Meoli will play, accompanied by the poetry of Pablo de la Plata.
Danielle Villicana D’Annibale is a vivacious and multifaceted personality. Musician, thespian, art scholar, painter, sculptress, ceramicist, set designer and gallerist, the Californian draws force from the words of Michelangelo: Lord, grant that I may always desire more than I can accomplish.
Hosted in the gallery is the retrospective of an artistic itinerary of twenty year duration. Works of various periods and different techniques, fruit of an eclectic activity and desire to develop knowledge, acquire skill and interact with artists of diverse origins.
As affirms Michele Loffredo, curator of the solo exhibit, Danielle Villicana presents herself to the public with numerous facets and appears indeed arduous and unsuitable to contain her artistic activity in stylistic barriers or in a reassuring critical formula. It seems opportune, to tell of an exuberant personality, set the activity at the present moment and relaunch the future planning, the concrete goal of this exhibit, retracing briefly the essential phases of her carrier, many of which represent rites of passage.
We go from the academic exercises to the testimonies of the emancipation from the classical figure, until ready-made works with boxes and medicinal blister packs.
At the pulsing heart of the exhibition is the series of Cigarette Box Paintings, characterizing experience of recent years. We are talking about paintings of an informal style, where the dense material and lacerated dialogue of the three dimensionality of the packs of cigarettes, creating a distinctive language of rare effect.
Brief biography:
Danielle Villicana D’Annibale was born in San Francisco, in California, in 1972.
In 1994 she graduates in Art History and the Visual Arts with a B.A. from Occidental College of Los Angeles.
The love for the Renaissance takes her to Italy in the same year, where she attends important masters and Florentine atelier, from Charles Cecil Studios to the Florence Academy, to the studio of Silvestro Pistolesi in 1996. Afterwards she learns the technique of fresco at the school of Leonetto Tintori of Prato.
In 2001 she enrolls in the Accademia di Belle Arti of Rome. She continues on the meantime her plastic and pictorial research, veering towards abstraction: the series Cigarette Box Paintings takes life.
With the academic diploma obtained in 2006, the American transfers to Arezzo, where she can live in close contact with the art of Piero della Francesca.
Collaborating with her husband Maurizio D’Annibale, light designer, Danielle Villicana begins working on the project Villa Margherita un Paradiso per Artisti in Toscana and opens, in 2010, a contemporary art gallery in the heart of the city, immediately becoming a favoured meeting place for Italian and foreign artists.
Since 1994 she has participated in solo and group exhibits in Italy and the United States. She is a member of the California Art Club, of the Cenacolo degli Artisti Aretini and founder of the Villa Margherita International Art Club.
