There comes a time for looking back upon the path taken. In our case this involves an eighteen year “journey” that has seen many things happen along the way. First of all we came up with the idea of Cittá di Udine, the international composition competition, which is now enjoying its ninth edition and has evolved over time into an internationally recognised initiative that today features thousands of works from all over the world (the latest edition alone featured 402 compositions from 49 countries). The competition awards ceremony is perfectly placed within this festival that was founded to create opportunities for composers and performers working in the setting of classical music. Over time the event has hosted eminent names in contemporary music and promising young artists at the beginning of their career (there are over 90 events in the 16 editions). As part of the fi xtures we also recall those dedicated to visual arts, which have been a feature in our programmes since the fi rst edition of the festival in 1996 (the SQUARE project, the most recent we have organised, received 415 works from 23 countries). Each festival has brought us face to face with the uncertainty of knowing whether this cultural journey could continue, and yet we are still here, despite the diffi cult times we live in. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the public and private institutions that continue to make all of this possible. The gamble on the future of a country like ours, this unquestionable home of the arts, is also made this way, by supporting cultural initiatives that are, essentially, excellent opportunities for growth and progress. Square, quadrato, piazza, agorà, forum (…) platform.
The objectives of the SQUARE project are to create a meeting place for artists that transfer from the internet to take part in multimedia project format that can be extended and multiplied.
For the occasion, cross-contamination between sound and image, which has always been the philosophy of TEM – Taukay Edizioni Musicali, generates an opportunity for comparison and discussion between different languages and cultures that share a common denominator of a specific format allowing creative expression. SQUARE becomes a meeting place for artists who strive to launch a form of shared visual experimentation.
