In physics, entropy is a quantity that is interpreted as a measure of disorder (chaos) in a physical system whatsoever, including, as a threshold matter, the universe. It is generally represented by the letter S.
In classical thermodynamics, the first area in which the entropy was introduced, S is a state function, which, by quantifying the unavailability of a system to generate work, is introduced together with the second law of thermodynamics. Based on this definition we can say, in a non-rigorous but explaining that when a system goes from a disordered to an ordered state increases its entropy, this fact provides guidance on the direction in which the system evolves spontaneously.
The molecular approach of statistical mechanics entropy correlates more closely to the concept of order, namely the different possible arrangements of the molecular levels and hence different probabilities which can be macroscopically a system . In the International System is measured in joules per kelvin (J / K).
The concept of entropy has seen a huge popularity, so much to be extended to areas not strictly physical, such as social sciences, signal theory, information theory.
