Liu Bolin
Exhibitions, Italy, Roma, 13 September 2012
The work of Liu Bolin is the culmination of a variety of forms including body art, performance, painting, and photography, the latter functioning as a final witness. The artist uses make-up, or rather camouflage paint that matches exactly with the location where he appears and almost causes him to disappear into it. He is then photographed, creating an indelible testimony to the loss of identity while he merges with the place where he stood.

The exhibition "A Secret Tour" documents the intense relationship between Liu Bolin and Italy. For the works in this show Liu Bolin transforms himself to become part of the Teatro Alla Scala, the Duomo of Milan, the painted wall of a house in Pompeii, the bridge of Castel Sant'Angelo, the Paolina Borghese, and other locations. But in this melding, there is also the inevitable reflection on what is now the relationship between the individual and place.
