La verdadera historia de Felipe Cardeña
On Friday, October 25, from 7 p.m. onwards, at the Galleria Bianca Maria Rizzi & Matthias Ritter, 27 Cadolini street, Milan, there will be a world première of the short film "Me gusta Soñar - La verdadera historia de Felipe Cardeña", directed by the artist Desiderio and dedicated to the life and work of the mysterious and controversial Hispanic artist Felipe Cardeña.
On this occasion, there will be also a double solo show of Desiderio and Felipe Cardeña. Desiderio exhibits his works of the "20 Cuc" series, including portraits of the characters in the short film, while Felipe Cardeña presents the installation "La parole obscure du paysage intérieur".
This short film, shot by the artist Desiderio – who is now living between Italy and Cuba – shows us Felipe, as a mime strolling in the streets of Havana, by means of cross witnesses of many people who met or heard about him: street mimes like him, but also bartenders, hawkers, vendors, street people, besides the famous Cuban writer Yoss, author of an essay on the artist.
A hybrid film, halfway between journalistic documentary and a dreamlike, symbolic reconstruction of Cardeña work, the film reconstructs the passage of Felipe in the streets of Havana, through witnesses, but also through Felipe performances (as the great floral poster, with the face of Che, still hanging in a street of Old Havana), the suggestions of his works, his dreamlike atmosphere and colors.
Finally, Felipe shows and does not show himself in a symbolic dance among the flowers and collages in his studio in the center of Havana.
To act as the storyteller of the "Verdadera historia de Felipe Cardeña", was chosen the Cuban street rapper Sicario, who tells the story, the memories and a lot of coming and going of Felipe on the streets of Havana.
Felipe Cardeña
Born in Balaguer, Spain, 1979, Felipe Cardeña has been devoting himself for years solely to the activity of street mime, running all around the world, from Europe, to Asia and India (where he was fascinated with the Hindu gods), to Cuba, that will soon become his second homeland. During his travels, Cardeña spreads thousands of flower stickers on the walls of cities around the world, in the name of the utopian-pacifist project "Flower Power”.
In 2005 he was living in Italy, where he came to the fore of art scene with a performance, presented by Alessandro Riva, in the "Miracle in Milan" show, where hundreds of people could look at him and got the opportunity to appreciate his talent as a mime.
A couple of years later, his identity and his work became the subject of a complex story, thanks to the creation of a permanent "laboratory" of works ascribed to him, characterized by technical flower-themed collage. But in the meanwhile, Cardeña disappeared into thin air, becoming more and more elusive and non-visible for his own personal and artistic choice.
He becomes more and more ambiguous and controversial, being the subject of gossip and curiosity (and often of debate), up to the point that somebody denies his very existence, as if he were a character of pure fantasy, in spite of people who met him and saw him at work in 2005.
But it is precisely this ambiguity of identity that enhances his work, because his research is becoming more open to basic questions of contemporary society, such as the multiplicity of identities in the age of web, the relationship between the truth, the likeness and the falsehood, the inability of media to find the objective and unambiguous truth, the play of references between real life and fiction and art.
Desiderio
Born in Milan in 1978, Desiderio is among the liveliest and most interesting leading characters in the new Italian art scene.
With a narrative that is constantly changing, moving through a plurality of media, ranging from video to performance, from painting to installation, with great technical sophistication and a strong dreamlike peculiarity.
Winner of the "Italian Factory Award for the young Italian painting" in 2008, he participated in numerous exhibitions and public events in Italy and abroad, among which: "Apocalypse Wow!" at Macro Future of Rome in 2008, "Festival Arte +", Havana, 2009, "Animal Room", La Pelanda, Macro, Rome, "Italian Pop Surrealism" at the Capitoline Museums and Centrale Montemartin, Rome in 2011, "Venice Biennale", Cuba Pavilion, in 2011, "Road Maps", Officine Creative Ansaldo, Milan, 2012, "CLUBnoCKE", a collateral event at the XI Biennial of Havana, 2012, "Crosssover", collateral event at the Venice Biennale, Arsenale, 2013, "Expo Robando Espiritus", Fototeca de Cuba, Havana, 2013.
He produced several films, among which: "Beauty Hazard" (2007), "Confabula Spurio" (2008), "I Love My Queen" (2009), "The Win on the Sky" (2012), "Ahora sì Llego!" (2013).
