Traveling is a myth of our times, a way to get in touch with reality and with ourselves, but also a kind of consumption, a ready dish cooked with prepackaged emotions.
The exhibition wants to make tabula rasa of consumerism and a critique of it, so as to think and tell the journey as if it were a new experience, without prejudices, fashions, attitudes, cultural background and differences.
In order that the journey may well go back to be an authentic and unique experience, you must go through your body, listen to messages, decipher the changes, learn how to expose it to the stresses that come from the outside without fear. Only at that moment you will rediscover your senses and your body - the pleasure of sweating, walking, remaining dazzled by sun or frightened by night, listening to its sounds, feeling emotions and inner discoveries.
Journey is movement not only of the body, but also of perception. It is a continuous reinvention of our thoughts and senses in front of new landscapes and faces or a rediscover of what we normally see under a new guise and through a new perception and sense of discovery in watching and not just in the habit of seeing.
It is not true that trips take place in the head, that you can travel by staying at home, that you can take beautiful trips with the mind. No, it is not true. The trip arises in the head, ripens, but, in order to exist it needs to absorb lymph through senses - touching, hearing, smelling, tasting, watching and causing to observe.
The journey - the true one - makes you endure inebriant hot and cold soaked with oblivion, makes you endure annoying winds and enjoy the first warmth of a sunrise.
This theme was developed during the different historical periods and in many artistic currents that developed at those times. It is not possible to identify a precise period during which artists have addressed the theme of travel.
Although we can see an evolution in the conception of this reality, together with a change of vision about man and about life itself that can be seen even in literary texts through the ages, we move from strictly figurative representation of means, places and characters, to the depiction of a journey which is less tied to the material aspect and more projected toward an inner discovery. The exhibition intent is that of proposing the theme of journey through the production of artists, painters, photographers, sculptors and video artists and to accompany it with the sensoriality it communicates, with tangible inner images rising during and after it.
"Travel! Losing countries! Constantly being something else so as the soul has no roots! Going on, chasing the absence of having
an aim and the anxiety of reaching it” Fernando Pessoa
