The dream merchant SHOW
A Colossal of Unusual and Visionary Art

Written and directed by Dores Sacquegna

On Saturday April 9 at 20:00 Primo Piano Living Gallery invites you to the exhibition “The Dream Merchant Show” , written and directed by Dores Sacquegna.
The show of unusual and visionary art (second edition) this year is a tribute to the world of an imaginary collective and the greatest dreamer of all times, William Shakespeare, who said that “men are made of the same substance as dreams”.
And so the curator (whose role in the show is the director) has made the casting , selecting dreamers for the first and second episodes of this extraordinary exhibition-colossal.
“Do you want to be my dreamer?” is a question that started a sort of sensorial network between the cast and the director. (Superstar Cameos , young talented performer) united and diverse in the ritualistic interventions in the two cinematographic parts.
The art gallery changed into a film set , decorated with “cult objects” , i.e. the artworks of the participants.
The entire colossal features two live actions created by two performers, four cameos (set designers, directors, artists) and the cast of the dreamers from the first and second episodes.
In the first episode Federico Cozzucoli (Messina,Italy 1972) will do a live performance about Simonia or “ the buying and selling of a dream, to become an artist “ . The audience will be asked to make and work under the guidance of the performer, who for the occasion will wear the sacred robes that for years make his art sacred. The resulting work will be displayed in the gallery , just like any other art work, and will be for sale during the exhibition.
A debate will follow with the first cameos, the artist-set designers Matteo Soltanto (Torino, Italy 1972) and Sergio Gotti (Latina, Italy 1951) . Matteo Soltanto debuts with a cycle of portraits with dissolving bodies suspended in fluctuating space. From the stage setting of “Pitti Images “ to the “Gegés Ark “ directed by Vittoirio Franceschi, from the “Daphne’s Diary “ to “Didactic Drama” by Brecht , from the costumes for “The Miser” by Moliére to “Scenes of a Marriage” by Ingmar Bergman , the artist has completed beautiful costumes and stage settings for the theatre and the cinema.

With Sergo Gotti we go to China in the year 1195 with a large triptych of gears that motion a sort of time machine, the ancient duel with the dragon, and the regenerative force of love. Among the various stage scenery he has designed, we cite “The Good Novel” by Fabrizio De André, the scenery of Diorami for the new Museum the Geopaleontology in Velletri (Rome) and for the theatrical comedy “ The Prompters” by Dino Buzzati, and others.

The superstars are Matthew Barney, Erwin Olaf, Ugo Nespolo , Eugenio Recuenco and the videos will be present during the entire event (from April 9 to May 18th)

Matthew Barney (USA 197) is showing his video “Cremaster 4, 1994” the fourth episode of the “Cremaster Cycle”. Set on the Isle of Man ( that has the emblem of three legged creatures and a famous motorcycle track ), the candidate Loughton tap dances and has four holes in his head for the horns that are going to grow from, while two sidecars race around the island, intersecting their movement with the candidate dancer. We can say that Matthew’s obsession with the further than human physic, the precision in the composition of the images, the sound track, the near lack of dialogue , the use of unusual materials such Vaseline and silicon , or honey like milky liquids that cover the surfaces , render him unique in his genre. He work is explosive, surreal and dreamlike. Credit: Written and directed by Matthew Barney . Produced by Artangel, London; Foundation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, Paris and Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York. Director of Photography: Peter Strietmann; Starring Matthew Barney. Ugo Nespolo (Itay 1941) is present with “ Le gote in fiamme” (The cheeks in flames), a short film from 1967 that has a woman with an umbrella in the leading role. It recalls the impressionists from the 19th century and she does not use the umbrella to shade herself, to cover her while she changes clothing , with a surprise ending. The artist has produced many films from 1966 up to today. He invited an international stars in the cast, like Lucio Fontana, Enrico Baj, Renato Volpini, Carla Vignola, Daniela Chapperotti, Giorgio Piana for the “ Adventure Gallery of the kind faced Knight” or “Boetinbiancoenero” with Alghiero Boetti , and furthermore “Good Morning Michelangelo” with Michelangelo Pistoletti, Gian Enzo Sperone , Gilberto Zorio, and others. Erwin Olaf (The Netherlands 1959) is presenting two videos “Dusk and Dawn” from 2009. From the gringo Dusk to the white disarming Dawn , a young woman who is concentrating on taking care of her child. The photography is very important for the artist, through the color and its disappearances. It is not important for Olaf to show the interpersonal relationships, even when there is intimacy. The same for the narration. He captures the instant in order to admire the details. The atmosphere that envelopes his films is refractory. Using fleeting moves that slowly come to life, he places his attention on poses and gestures. Eugenio Recuenco (Spain 1970) is showing two videos from 2008, “Babylon Circus ” and “En medio de la nada”, an artist from Madrid , he loves the surreal , the nomadic world of the circus and theatre of the 30’s.
In “Babylon” men and women cross the river in delicate paper boats , trusting the wind to take them to the promised land. The visualization of the double is what makes the offer. In the first frame and man observes the stars with binoculars and the other one offers. In the second frame a couple trying to escape, there is a big pole crowning and comforting their trip in that untouchable distance , of infinity that repeats and dilates to a rhythm with a surprise scene.
