Lamia Khorshid: "Inherent Spaces"
Exhibitions, Italy, Firenze, 02 July 2013
LAMIA KHORSHID

INHERENT SPACES
JULY 2-26, 2013
OPENING: TUESDAY, JULY 2 AT 6PM

Photographs by SACI Visiting Instructor Lamia Khorshid, who during the opening will give a presentation on her work.
Lamia Khorshid's photography has been inspired by her family's migration from Egypt to the US in 1985, when she was eight years old, in search of a better opportunity and way of life. Growing up as a female in a Muslim family displaced in a Western culture provided an interesting juxtaposition for Lamia as an artist:

"It has proved to be a vital experience that has allowed me to think critically about social, cultural, religious, and gender based practices. I approach my artwork first from a personal, and then from a shared universal social experience that allows for reflection on adopted modes of thinking, and their antithesis. Through my work I have explored ideas about female sexuality as liberation, the veil as a source of conflict and transformation, adornment as a cultural practice of seduction, clothing and costume as an element of persona, and most recently, domestic space as a stage and home as a transient impermanent concept."

Lamia Khorshid is an Egyptian born artist, educated in the United States, currently residing in Miami Beach, Florida. She received her MFA degree in Photography / Digital Imaging in 2007 from the University of Miami.
Lamia is an active exhibiting artist working in photography and video. Her upcoming solo show opens in Florence, Italy in July 2013 at SACl. Her last solo show was in the Wynwood District in Miami in 2011. She has participated in several annual fairs and group exhibitions, including Art Palm Beach, MIA, Art Miami, Art Basel Miami Beach, Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale, Lowe Art Museum, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Photo Place Gallery Vermont, SPE San Francisco Conference, Miami Beach Cinematheque, the UM Project Space in Wynwood and the Miami Center for the Photographic Arts. She curated independent shows from 2006 – 2009. She recently lectured at the Hawaii International Conference on Arts & Humanities in 2012, the Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables in 2013, Curator’s Voice Art Projects, and MIU in 2011. She has presented papers at the Florida Consortium of Women’s Studies Conference in Tampa in 2007, as well as at MOCA Goldman Warehouse that same year. In 2009, she opened and launched The Miami Photo Academy offering group workshops in photography.

She currently teaches Photography and Digital Imaging at the University of Miami during the year, and at SACI in Florence, Italy in the summers.
