The SACI Gallery is proud to present and exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Rod Bugg. A sculptor, Bugg uses clay and drawings to express differences between the artist’s process and the chosen materials. He sees his drawings and sculptures as having ‘parallel’ associations with each other, rather than one medium acting as a precursor to a completed artwork. Both the sculptures and drawings are organizations of elements highly dependent on the material used. The materials are fundamental and basic – usually graphite or charcoal on paper and fired clay. Bugg restricts these choices consciously in order to concentrate on their formal and plastic qualities. To add to his material restrictions, he uses only black, white or red clay with simple glazes. Although the sculptural pieces are frequently made from almost two-dimensional slabs, they have a tactile nature evoking re-used materials and archaeological finds. In some pieces, the organic material of clay is presented in controlled geometric compositions. His installations are thoughtfully and spatially arranged depending on their environment. The parallel communication between the drawings and the sculptures is evident.

Rod Bugg studied sculpture and ceramics in London and South Wales before completing his masters in Birmingham in the late 1960s. He has been making and exhibiting sculpture continuously since that time and has showed extensively in galleries and museums primarily in Europe and in North America. He has exhibited drawings and work in clay for nearly 30 years in solo exhibitions at the Galerie de Witte Voet, Amsterdam. He was President of Wimbledon College of Art in London from 1997 to 2007 and previously Dean of Art at London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art. He is currently Lead Artist on the sculpture program at the Sidney Nolan Trust and the chairman of an international organization for education in galleries and museums.

The SACI Gallery is open Monday – Friday 9:00am-7:00pm and Saturday 1:00-7:00pm.
