Matriz Associação de Gravura do Porto is a women’s initiative and has remained a female association until recently when two male artists have joined the association, developing and participating in all the projects of interchange with other artists’ organizations. The members and their works being presented at SACI’s Palazzo Jules Maidoff for the Visual Arts are like friends paying a visit to an old and inspiring acquaintance who has performed a very important role in their lives. Jules Maidoff is an Honorary Member of Matriz since 2006. Both Jules Maidoff and Mary Beckinsale gave, from the very first moment, an extraordinary spontaneity to our activity.

The exhibition Sonhos e Imaginação/ Racconti con Figure shows a collection of works resulting from individual projects of a group of artists who respect and support each other’s differences, assembled by the same love for printing. The title in Italian, Racconti con Figure, is not a translation of the Portuguese title, but is similar in meaning, a kind of ambiguous way of paying homage to António Tabucchi, of Tuscany, his mother land. A lover of Pessoa’s legacy, Tabucchi has become a respected voice as critic and teacher of the great Portuguese poet. As a writer, his fiction and poetry delighted readers by its subtlety and his special way of leaving something to explain, along with his melancholy and dark atmosphere regarding life and emotions.

Tabucchi’s love for visual arts is clearly transmitted through his book Racconti con Figure:
Painting has often inspired my writing. If I hadn't visited the Prado one afternoon long ago in 1970, I would not have been a 'prisoner' in front of Las Meninas by Velazquez, fixated and unable to leave the gallery until the museum closed, I would not have written 'II gioco del rovescio'.

The MAIDOFF Gallery is open Monday to Friday 9am-7pm. Free entry.
