Silvio Giordano “Sport Your Food”, National Museum of Science of Mialn, until 20th May
09 May 2012
Silvio Giordano won the Premio Celeste's Video and Animation price in 2009.

The core concept that created the exhibition SPORT YOUR FOOD is based on the assumption that nowadays gastronomy, far from being just a means to feed the body, is entering popular perception in a similar way to art. Let’s consider for example the dinners created by today's master chefs, with the most exotic ingredients and choreographed on plates like pieces of art! The pilgrimage in search of the ‘starred’ restaurant or the typical “osteria” has become a lifestyle in many different countries (not only for Italians, who are recognized worldwide as maestros of food and art).

Today chefs (different from common cooks in that they manage the whole kitchen, create/invent the menu and the prices of the dishes) are courted by the media and loved by the audience just as TV celebrities. Of course, the art they practice is much more popular than the often over-intellectual speculations offered by contemporary artists. That is mainly because everybody eats: be it for gluttony, stress, love, or survival.

On the other hand relatively few can call themselves real art lovers, since art has increasingly become just a way to provoke strong reactions in its audience, sometimes through obscenity and violence, and on the whole it is expensive and overrated.

Great chefs and artists alike, though often poles apart, in any case share a certain genius – often accompanied by a twist of craziness – that makes them able to interpret history and to dictate fashion and lifestyles for the rest of us.

THE INSTALLATION

SPORT YOUR FOOD is a contemporary art exhibition that stands alone because it wants to answer the question “Is food the new art?”. Moreover SPORT YOUR FOOD sets itself a goal that no exhibition ever has: to explain to the audience what was going through the artists and chefs’ minds when they created their works.

How many times, while visiting a museum, did you ask yourself what a famous artist was trying to say with his cryptic installation, without ever receiving an answer? How many times did you wish to be at the side of the chef in front of his stove to understand his thoughts, his decisions, his approach to cooking? Well, visiting this exhibition you’ll be able to answer all these questions, irrespective of what you think about the works!
