The Name - an exhibition by Shane Bradford, winner of Celeste Art Prize 2007, at The Institute Of Jamais Vu, London, UK, April 20th May 5th, 2012.
The Name is a complex network of forms, ideas and associations that takes on the template of art exhibition as its primary means of communication. Shane Bradford, under this interpretation, is an artist who makes intricate and intentionally well-crafted objects, often using the process of ‘dipping’ with which he has become synonymous. In this primary guise the work responds to aesthetics and current formal artistic discourse as expected.
The exhibition, however, is accompanied by a short play-script entitled Trouble In The Cartesian Theatre that sets up the possibility of a secondary interpretation of the objects on view and subsequently questions the primary and instinctual reading of the exhibition itself. In a demonstrative display of modern philosophical tenets from the likes of Baudrillard and Daniel Dennett, The Name is an exhibition about an exhibition entitled the Name. From this shakey foundation can we glimpse the paradoxical flavour and intentionally ambiguous nature of the event known as the Name.

The curtain is up and the house lights are down so please take your seats for an intellectual and artistic performance bordering on the paradoxical. In these analects of academic and fictional essays the very condition of artistic process takes centre stage whilst the possibility for a future union between concept and aesthetics is put under the spotlight. The Name momentarily levitates reality, peeking under the carpet of art in a fruitfully futile attempt to name that which cannot be named.
