21 June 2011
Paul Beel, winner of Premio Celeste's Painting prize in 2009 http://www.celesteprize.com/paulbeel
presented his grandiose work "Epic Mirtiotissa" on June 16 at the National Portrait Gallery, London, at the annual BP Portrait Award, one of the most prestigious portrait competitions in the world.

The work was created with prize-money received from the 'BP Travel Award 2010.' Artists who win the prize are given 5,000 pounds sterling to travel with the aiming of making a portrait.

"With my purse I chose to go to a nudist beach in Corfu, Greece, for the month of September, where I have painted a great portrait with 27 people, water and rocks in plein air", says Paul.

The painting has been exhibited alongside a video directed by Paul detailing his experiences on the island of Corfu while painting. This giant painting of a nudist beach on Corfu is thought to be the largest work ever shown at the BP Portrait Award http://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/exhibitions/bp-portrait-award-2011/bp-travel-award-2010.php

From 16 June until 18 Septembers 2011
