Interview: Patrizia Dottori, the pain of women must be written on the stone.
08 April 2014
Patrizia Dottori, artist of extraordinary sensitivity, empathy and sweet, is an Italian photographer who lives between Rome and Buenos Aires. One of his last works, Lapides, is dedicated to the serious problem of violence against women and femicide, it is a photographic work poetic, powerful and moving from the undeniable aesthetic value. The images of Patrizia Doctors have become the symbol of the fight against violence against women, a delicate and complex issue that deserves attention too extreme by the institutions. How did your passion for photography?
I must say that the image has always accompanied me: my father painted, my uncle from my mother's side, was a photographer . But I've never even been able to draw, and to photography as I was saturated up to 25 years! Yes I started late, but in reality I had it all inside ... It ' happened by chance, a friend had a Nikon that did not use and I have studied the manual. I did a little shots and I liked and I continued . Then I found a camera in the street, a Minolta XGM, and that was the sign of true: it was 198, since then I have not stopped . Then also love to surrealism and metaphysics, as Man Ray and Ansel Adams photography, all led me in a direction that I did not know then. Then I made courses , discussions , internships, also very different from the photograph , as director, screenplay , painting, assembly. I believe that photography is a way to express their inner search. For this technique is not, in fact for me is anything but pure technique: acutally, I forgot it , I wound up in the things that I have assimilated.
Why work on violence against women ?
In addition to photography I have always been involved in politics and rights, then, because I think that each of us carries with it what's inside I think I've put together art and politics. At first most unconsciously, then over time I found out, through my own photos, this was definitely one of the ways that I wanted to go. When I started the project Lapides in 2010, I had already dealt with the theme of femicide, but I had not produced a working mine. I was looking my way inside to pull out an important message, a way that was not didactic, that had not already seen. Before leaving for a job in the granite quarry Luz de Compostela in Spain, I was attracted by an old shop where I went years ago and fuchsia dress that was the first thing I saw. I thought for a dress to wear, but it was not my size, and yet I could not help but buy it and take it with me. I did not know why, I found out when I was in the groove ... It ' was a magical moment , because in one of the walls of the quarry , marked by cutting , there was just the shape of my dress. Every time I think I have the chills.

Tell us about your relationship with femininity ?
It is not easy today to talk about femininity : it's all very confused by the feminist struggles. Confused so wrong ... And I mean it was very difficult to recover from the 70s to today femininity that had never been put aside. I'm female, feminine and feminist, three different aspects of living in perfect harmony with each other. Not much according to the male gender ... In fact, I believe that men are afraid of just such a harmony that now belongs to us and that I like to call "Beauty "! We women, in harmony, we are beautiful, and beauty is scary ... as well as the happiness ... I think that is inherent in our culture to think that we can not or do not deserve to feel good, to be happy and to be beautiful. And do not turn this thought even that surrounds us and belongs to us, including nature .

The property coldness of the stone, its hardness and the fleeting sweetness of a pink dress, a sublime metaphor , the illustrious me ?
That is : while the idea of the stone approaches the concept of coolness . But our land is stone ! It seems so cold ? I thought just that: the use of stone that shines in my case because of a particular granite, gives life to the ston , so to nature, so to Beauty! Even Woman is Beauty, as I said, for this I have put together what defiles the man , because it disfigures the beauty . The reference to the stone, with Lapides , from Latin lapis Lapidis , which refers to stoning , is a scream against those who use the stone to kill. The stones should not be leveled against beauty ...
Your message to the men who harm women ...
Today there is much talk of violence against women, femicide, in Italy, in proportions that we could ever imagine. It ' a problem of society, culture and traditions that see the man always prevails over a woman. Meanwhile, I believe that there is no education in respect to the beauty and happiness, so it is easy, in all fields, not only in this particular one, take it out on us who appears weaker or marginalized. There are those who believe that marginalize the "other" are weaker in reality is just the opposite. The women are strong, as well as those who cross the sea in a boat improbable demonstrate strength and courage. Elements missing from bullies, otherwise they would not be such a message ... ? More ... introspection and reflection : once you've killed the woman who does not belong to him anymore , I really feel better ? I think not , because the problem is not in getting rid of the problem , but in having the courage to confront and clash, Here today men from the time of feminism have not made much progress , they feel uncomfortable, and not have tools to express this discomfort that consumes them ... As an artist, I'm trying to do my job in this regard , through the images of absences, work on the lack of a body in isolated places of nature. If even one of them will try sadness in alerting the absence, I've reached my goal.
Your next job ?
I have already started a new job on the identity, Identity Passport, the story of themselves through the passport , which is a travel document as it is a journey of our life , present, past and future . I'm also finishing a book on Cuba, also there between politics and rights (entitled " Propaganda - Cuba on the wall " , with photos of the Cuban political propaganda and everyday life , accompanied by the text of the basic rights of the Cuban Constitution ) and I hope to close in the coming months . But I still have a lot to do with Lapides and other work on the elements of nature (Fireberg , ShineBerg , WoodBerg , Moonshining , Skin), which I put together in a single work called Mother & Land. I would , however, exceed the limits of the exhibitions and make sure that these jobs will become a real message , which can be seen to reflect, which is the work of the artists . I filed a public-works project ( ForEveRose - 4ER ): the idea is to print the photos are on a slab of granite about 180x80cm , along with some roses created by a sculptor, and put them in public places, where people spend and they can remain in their thoughts track . Then, yes, hundreds , thousands of people would be forced to think, or even just carry around an image from an image ... and it brings each other that lead to hidden corners of his soul .
The photo you would like to still take ?
This is really a difficult question ! I am reminded that I wanted to take some photos , but not those that would click ... I have to look for the next shots that I will, as I have done to date ...
