“Massacre of the Innocents” references Peter Paul Rubens’ painting of the same title from 1611-12 and was made in response to the banking crisis that led to global economic recession. Investment bankers ultimately “playing” with the fortunes of ordinary families as if their jobs were no more consequential than a video game. The work also explores the means by which an artist is able to comment on the contemporary social and economic environment by approaching the subject from an oblique, original direction to subvert the normal channels of poiltical discussion.
