empire state - evolutis

this clip is the culmination of over 38,000 still images of the empire state building captured from the same angle and location. the images were taken from forty-one different sessions in different seasons, and sequenced in order of file size: from the smallest to the largest, spanning 26:41 in the timeline.

what emerges is an evolution of images. the jpeg compression determines that images with less detail, less focus, or a smaller tonal range will come earlier in the sequence. an individual image with greater pixel complexity will generally have a larger file size and will appear later in the timeline. images captured from the same session generally have similar content and will tend to gravitate around a particular point in the timeline. order erupts out of the chaos.

the audio was collected from different locations all over manhattan, and is arranged in an attempt to reflect the chaotic feel of the video.
