Censored Figure on Bed
This painting is based on an already partially censored image: one of the black censoring triangles being present in the original image. During the painting process I added the second of the black rectangles. This not only shows the positive act of the negative violence of censorship but raises two questions: Firstly, when does censorship takes place during the process of representation—is already-present censorship reproduced along with the rest of the image, or does it become lost, incorporated into the image during the act of reproduction? And secondly, does this mean that there may be already-present censorship hidden in all reproductions?
This second point is underlined by the inclusion in the painting of the reproduction of the flag.
