Double Dutch
The title, "Double Dutch" refers to a children’s playground game. For me, this game represents childhood memories, feelings of acceptance, play, competition, and repetition. Instead of a jump-rope, I used the image of the winding garden hose. The coiled and circular imagery continues with the two females representing opposing ends of the cycles of life. The face of the mature woman is the Duchess of Windsor (a play on words with “Dutch”); a strong, regal face juxtaposed with a young sexy body. The larger female figure is a combination of three images: my daughter jumping on her bed, a friend of hers standing behind a chain-link fence and an unknown girl's fist from an old magazine.
In this piece I hope to evoke a sense of the passage of time and the vicissitudes of memory and circumstance.
