TO KNOW OR NOT TO KNOW

TO KNOW OR NOT TO KNOW

Installation, Political / Social, Various materials, 30x21cm
Mixed media:ink, pen, collage, acrylic, graphite, gouache. A4 size handmade replicas of newspapers to cover all 3 walls of the gallery space(56 newspaper on each wall). The floors will be covered in blown up prints of original newspapers stuck on the floor. The installation will cover the walls of the gallery with newspapers from Iran, each recreated by hand, yet copying the exact content. What happened in Iran after the green movement prompted me to do this series of works because there was no one left to report except our local newspapers which report mostly lies, demonstrating the extreme dictatorship and lack of freedom of speech in Iran. They are a proof of how the government insults its own people by telling lies. I am hoping to document current events in order to contribute, no matter how insignificantly, to bringing the world’s attention to the travesties and injustice happening in my country. Even if nothing comes out of it but awareness, then I have fulfilled my role as an artist and a messenger. The work opens a different window of perspective to that of mass media. The work teaches viewers the responsibility they carry for their society. It is above politics.
