The Russian dolls, hanging from a gallows symbolises the experiences of ordinary people worldwide, and throughout history - death being the ultimate sanction of censorship. One of the dolls is missing, which again symbolises the method of abusive political regimes of 'disappearing ' those who criticise the regime.
