Phantom Withdrawal
While individual pieces are spare, unadorned, there is an almost theatrical element to the installation. Sculptures are staged, hung effigies. Contorted, bony, angular and fleshless, they seem at first glance undernourished or eviscerated. Yet as their shadows shift and flicker they cast images more vibrant and melodious than the forms by which they are created. As positive and negative roles are blurred, viewers are asked to peer at images from multiple perspectives. Within the stark brutish frailty of the disintegration, a resilience, resourcefulness and capacity for reinvention are spotlighted. The wooden sculptures, more air than matter, soar and spin in an almost elated euphoric potential for rebirth.
