The Cloisters/Madonna and Geisha in progress

Initially how would I interpret "Pieta" today in the context of contemporary narrative painting? What if I switch around the roles of the figures so that perhaps I could address current cultural issues in the United States? We are still struggling with gay, the same sex and equal right issues today.
