Public Address

2013

HD video (720p) Pal, colour, sound
Duration: 19.10 min.

Public Address presents a shortened version of an hour-long continuous recording of the constant stream of visitors to the most iconic building of the post-communist era, the Reichstag in Berlin, Germany.

In the attendant sound track four political speeches given at different times in Berlin by Presidents Obama, Reagan and Kennedy, including a second speech by Reagan at Bergen Belsen in 1985, combine to create overlapping, fractured and intersecting timelines. Although from different historical periods the individual speeches made by different American Presidents offer a similar rhetoric and recurrent political themes throughout. Keywords are reiterated in all of the speeches but also resonate a shift in political and economical perspectives before and after the fall of the wall. The disjuncture between image and sound conjures a sense of experiencing the present through the past.

Public Address explores contemporary experiences of inbetweeness engendered by the conflation of historical narratives and modern architecture.
