PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - HRIŇOVÁ 1/3
Limited edition of paintings is produced by mixed technology – artistic photography by LSZ Photography with acrylic paintings on canvas by Sarah Avni. Each painting from this limited edition has the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) and will be made only in three dimensions: 60 x 90 cm, 80×120 cm and 120 x 180 cm. “Parta” in Hriňová and Detva was worn only to church and engagement ceremonials; only brides wore it. If the bride was very poor and did not have “parta”, she wore only a chiffon scarf. K.A.Medvecký, in his work Detva in 1906, firstly mentioned the “parta” from this region as a part of his monography. “Parta” was worn for the last time in 1940. After the Second World War, “parta” was worn very rarely because it was replaced by the trend from the 50ties: a veil and white dress. In Hriňová, there are still 6 pieces of “parta” preserved, the one for this photoshoot comes from the 80ties. This “parta” consists of a strip of a cardboard, thicker wire, garlands of flowers (wax or cloth), bi-colored ribbons with the length up to the knees and small ornaments such as: beads, “limbačky” (sequins), “pukličky” (glass at beads) and “trasalá” (bristles decorated with beads). The owner of this “parta” is Mrs. Šuleková. AUTHORS PHOTO : LSZ PHOTOGRAPHY CANVAS PAINTINGS : Sarah I. Avni FACE PAINTINGS : Andrea Ľubocká ETHNOLOGICAL SUPERVISION : Bc. PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - MARTOVCE 1/3
MARTOVCE The most striking decoration of the bride from the village Martovce was bridal wreath, made of colorful artificial owers, beads and golden spikes. There are no differences in the type of wreaths, the only difference is in the length and color of the flowers and ornaments. Under the wreath a bride wore braided hair and was always rosemary in them, which was the subject of protection. Dress of young bride were generally made from black silk. Residents of Martovce stopped wearing the wreath in the 40’s. Since 1938, this wreath is used only for folklore performances by Martosi Hagyományőrző Együttes – while performing a wedding dance called “Martos lakodalmas”, which is still a fascination for the audience even today. In the village there are still a few pieces of this wreath among the older generation. Mayor Mr. Ing. István Keszeg lent one of them to us. AUTHORS PHOTO : LSZ PHOTOGRAPHY CANVAS PAINTINGS : Sarah I. PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - CEROVO 2/3
“Parta” from the Lutheran village Cerovo, is original in it ́s shape and ornaments. Interesting elements of the headband are small tresses of braided blond hair called “tráke”. Unless women did not have fair colored hair, they would let some parts of their dark hair burn, due to the fact that parts of the dark hair would let the sun wash out the color. The “parta” was worn only on festive days to church. There were two kinds of “parta” in this region. Firstly young girls wore it before adulthood without a wreath and after, adult women wore it with a wreath. This “parta” is the last, 73 year’s old exemplar. Its owner is Mrs. Šebianová. PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - KOJŠOV 1/3
In the mid-20th century, festive clothing was complemented by “parta” which started to be worn by 13 years old girls. “Parta” consisted of “prišolko”- golden band on a forehead, wreath made of glitter ( which was not worn by the bride during the wedding ceremony ), “pantľe” – includes a red belt, intermediate “pantľe” – ribbon embroidered with colorful oral ornament, two side “pantľe” – red with green ornament, “šory and rohy” – green ribbons, temple rings – blue “spľetané šnorky” (home braided ribbon). “Parta” in the picture is an inheritance from Mr. Lukáš Mackovjak’s grandmother and she is 95 years old. In the village Kojšov you can still nd about 30 traditional “partas”. Today the “parta” is worn only on big religious holidays and on a stage. PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - KÁLNICA 1/3
On this photograph you can see the last preserved piece of “parta” from Kálnica. Only a girl who did not have a child at that time could have worn this “parta”. The last time the “parta” appeared at a wedding was in the mid 1940’s. Parta is decorated with glass beads, waxy florets and various shiny toothed plates called “cingrlátka”. Above the ears on each side there are white flowers, then on the top there are three long red embroidered ribbons reaching to the waist. The red color symbolizes life, blood and a young woman suitable for conception. As an addition to the “parta” there is a chaplet made from fresh rosemary springs. PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - KRÁSNA 1/3
Only brides wore wreaths in Košice, district Krásna, until 1960. The wreath was once bought in the shops, most of which were owned by Jews in Košice. Later, when the villagers already had a prototype, women made wreaths of their own. They had different heights and consisted of synthetic, white and pink owers, slide-view mirrors which, when a bride was moving, re ected light. Other decorations were “pacerki” – beads and thin white ribbons that covered wires. Hair was piled up into a braid and in which was a wide white ribbon. Into a wreath was embroiled asparagus and “rozmarija” (rosemary) – when the bride was not pregnant already. As a veil replaced the wreath, there is preserved only one wreath, which we lent from Mrs. Irena Feketeová. AUTHORS PHOTO : LSZ PHOTOGRAPHY CANVAS PAINTINGS : Sarah I. Avni FACE PAINTINGS : Bc. PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - PODKARPATSKÁ RUS 1/3
This wreath belongs to costumes from Podkarpatská Rus is borrowed from Šatnica, today‘s Rentals costumes shop. Ethnological research for ethnography of Šatnica was realized in 1957 by Mrs. Irena Tonkovičová. Based on this research, costumes from this area have been made along with wreaths for girls. Base of the rim was formed red with a red woolen knit, which was wrapped around sown paper wreath. The cross-section of this wreath is oval. The diameter at the front is 2.5 to 3.5 cm, in the rear it is more narrow. This wreath is lined with fringes and flowers from colored wool. Predominant colors are red, yellow, black and green. Among fringes there is extended wire frame, on the wired stems we can see mirrors and colored blown glass beads. From “parta” in the rear are hanging 2-3 cm wide hand-knitted woolen ribbons – “tráčky”. We are thankful to Mrs. Milada Špalková. AUTHORS PHOTO : LSZ PHOTOGRAPHY CANVAS PAINTINGS : Sarah I. PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - VALALIKY 1/3
Wearing “party” in the village Valaliky in eastern Slovakia is documented on wedding photos from the late 19th century, however, they could have been worn also before. “Parta” was worn by a bride to be on her wedding day; it was spectacular and richly decorated. Girls on first communion, confirmation, religious occasions wore smaller white garlands. As a symbol of protection they used green rosemary wreath pinned with a goose feather, which was clipped on a bride’s head. One interesting tradition in Valaliky was that wedding “party” could not be lent or given to another person in the village, because the marriage would be unfortunate. According to a local tradition, “party” have been associated with magical superstition, so they had to be burned in a sacred fire. In the 60s of the 20th century, “parta” was gradually replaced by tiara with veil called “šlajer”. This “parta” was lent to us by Mr. Pavol Kacvinský. PARTY IN THE 21ST CENTURY - VEĽKÝ LOM 1/3
This unique “parta” from Veľký Lom has been worn for approximately 300 years until the 60s. In that period only 14-15 year old girls, which were usually brides wore it. It was made from 40 centimeter long, multi-colored embroidered ribbons, shiny decorations called “blyskáče” and pearls. The base of the “parta” consisted of wood coated canvas. The hairstyle worn under the “parta” was allegedly called “na mazničke” which meant the path to the sides. The “parta” from Veľký Lom is distinctive from the others in Slovakia. They never had the “parta” with that many ribbons hanging from its front and back. This “parta” is the only one documented in Novohrad region. Unfortunately there are no original “party” from this region anymore. Therefore a member of our team ethnologist Mr. Rago reconstructed one piece for this project. He used available photos, resources and individual interviews.
