In 1913, Italian soldiers deployed in Cyrene, Libya, found a headless sculpture, known today as the “Venus of Cyrene”.
The artist interprets Aphrodite in a contemporary key by incorporating a common vanitas symbol – the butterfly - as a reminder of the human soul and the transitoriness of human life in juxtaposition to the static Hellenistic marble statue.
