Landless Men

Landless Men

The Landless men project wants to open a window on the identity of the migrant / refugee using a tool such as photography which by its nature is a direct language, free of brokerage and thus universally "readable." The reality of the migrant, is rather more than ever unknown, nebulous and instrumentalized. Every day the media update us on the large scale situation: as different streams move, which are the borders under pressure, the number of deaths, the results of another emergency meeting of the European Community, the nationalistic selfishness and generosity of individuals. But the migrants remain in the background, extras, talking about it without really knowing them as if to keep this distance can make them less human and therefore justify at best our indifference. The project presented here points to the small retail, the single story first to know and then maybe to understand what the most for now escapes. The intent is to give one more tool for reasoning about what is going on, starting from those who arrived in Italy and is now in a "limbo", waiting for a permit, a job, a place to return to live. Where to start? Initially I approached these people trying to tell the present and the past of these people. Take a step back in the lives of these men and these women who are not only what we see now but that surely but that surely were also other before getting here.. Reconstruct the plot of the story by welding together the present and the past, the latter attracted perhaps by those fleeing objects that they brought with them: photographs, a book, letters arriving from those who remained and could not or did not want to leave. I knew right away that the project could not be developed because most of the refugees did have not materially nothing of their own country. The next idea was therefore to provide people in front of me to express themselves freely, to write in his own hand and in their own language what he wanted: a poem, a saying of their land, a thought. The possibility during shooting to overlay the image of the migrant and what he wrote provides in my opinion onemore element to approach these people. The project is young, not even a year old, but I plan to take it forward in the coming years. To know more www.vittoriocolamussi.com
