Crepe

Crepe

In the world really turned upside down, the true is a moment of the false.
-The Society of the Spectacle-
Guy Debord 1967

“Cracks” is a journey around the borders of Europe. It began in October 2015 and it is still a work in progress.
Lampedusa, Lesbos, Calais, the Mediterranean Sea, Ceuta, Tanger, Melilla, Idomeni, Bulgaria, Istanbul are some of the borders that I have crossed during this journey.
“Cracks” is a narrative with three points of view: the narrator, me, my eyes and the lens of my photo and video cameras; the interpreter that crosses the border or live on the border, and those who are watching.
A crossmedial project structured with different techniques and a balance attempted between social research, reportage and artistic practices.
Photographs, videos, mind maps and objects build the scaffolding of memories, pieces of perceptions that animate the historical process of this great migration.
The pictures selected for this narrative, are integrated with the mind maps of the migrants rescued from the Aquarius, the vessel of sos Mediterrane and Doctors Without Borders, and then the migrants met on the streets of Rome and Milan. All the drawings have the same focus: their idea of freedom. Afterwards the migrants are photographed with their drawning in front of the face.
To complete the path, I photographed objects and belongings lost by migrant people on their journey to the doors of Europe, collected and stored by the collective Askavusa in their daily commitment to preserve memories of this historical process in Lampedusa island.
The narration through images flows around videos in which the protagonists, filmed from behind with long sequence, narrate their stream of consciousness influenced by the perception of the places from which they pass through, currently, the " itinerant soliloquies", are more then 70 , from all over the languages .
The border is a place of passage, identification and containment, in which the "spotlight of the imagination." are turned on. Those spotlight gleam of words like "invasion" and "emergency" that produce tangible effects on the masses who observe them: emotion, misunderstanding, hatred, racism, fear and rejection.
The imaginary product put a veil on the real but inevitably remain some cracks through which the truth, like a full color light, can filter.
The road that I have undertaken in my project journey is seeking the truth along those cracks.
“Cracks” wants to transform the object of his narrative in a narrative subject.
“Cracks” Use a transmedial language to suggest an entire galaxy of perceptions, different points of view, even very far from each other. “Cracks” is a contribution, a tool that gives the possibility to the user, the third point of view, to decline the reality and to get his own idea, individual and personal.
Borderblob is a nonlinear web archive: the container that I am developing together with the web designer -imagoeditor-, inside of which is contained the project “cracks”.
