Study after George Bellows' boxers fighting scene

In the painting by George Bellows boxing assumes social connotations . Boxers , bandits because boxing is illegal , can become members of sports clubs only when they fight and put on a show . The sports scene becomes a pretext to represent the animal aspect of human nature : the sport ethical violence on the one hand , the bloodlust of the roaring elitist crowd on the other.
As a painter of the human figure I was immediately captured by the unusual pose of boxers , respectively static tension and dynamic tension and by the grotesque faces and caricatures of the crowd in Daumier style, which I turned into passive and vicious spectators.
My study clearly loose the original work's political aims while it proposes an evocative and existential interpretation of the expressive power of the human figure .
