In this work, I am going to present a real-time moving image of a kinetic sculpture, produced by "New Video Player" I invented.

1. CONCEPT
How can we convey with video the presence of an object in the same way we feel it in real space?
The device, which I invented and named "New Video Player", enables viewers to see an object as an illusory video image despite it exists in front of them. Using the mechanism of camera obscura, this box-like device projects an image of 3D objects on a screen. Having the kinetic sculpture move inside itself, the device produces images in a totally different way from conventional video-recording devices.

2. CONTEXT
I have been creating kinetic sculptures using everyday items as components of machines. The originality of my sculptures lies in a sense of presence experienced like an event happening in front of the viewers. Unfixed interlocking of each component makes their motion clumsy and indeterminate. Their instability forces the viewers to be aware of the corporeality of the machines.

In this work, I will attempt to reduce a real sculpture to an illusory image while maintaining its aura. The device will project physical motions without converting them into video signals.

3. A SENSE OF PRESENCE AND PHYSICALITY IN VIDEOS
Videos are never capable of retaining objects' presence that I have addressed. I define this concept as "a feeling that an object is in front of us". Since video is made of rays without mass, what really exists in the space is video equipments, which I refer to as the physicality in video. Although the machinery and moving images have been interrelated throughout history, the physicality of the machines has increasingly been suppressed in the recent development of video equipments from cinematographs to smart phones.
