Broken Hope

Broken Hope

Painting, Political / Social, Philosophy, Ideas, Emotion, Mixed technique, 68x61cm
OIL / MIXED MEDIA ON CARVED WOOD
This work conveys my thoughts and concerns about the human condition. It began with observation and reflections on one person’s life journey. The outer profile shows how a life begins full of energy, with many potential opportunities and hope for a bright future. Then years later inside the same life all hopes shattered, represented by the blue cracked centre. Haunted by ghosts of the past, wrong decisions, missed opportunities and paths not taken. The work is a metaphor for all humanity. The large face symbolises human life on earth. We were born into a natural paradise with the ability to make choices about how life unfolds. The central cracked face suggests we have not achieved the world our ancient ancestors may have hoped for.
