katharsis
At the centre of the obscured hall a gigantic black sphere hovers above an artificial expanse of water (optional if possible!), shrouded in a thin fog. The illuminated sphere is perfectly reflected upside down in the water surface. When passing the threshold of a singular stripe of light the visitor launches a series of consecutive events. The globe itself becomes the source of light and emits stroboscopic flashes of lightening from its core. After this short eruption of violent cataclysm the setting returns to its original disposition, ready for yet another cycle.
For the title Mark Swysen got his inspiration from the Greek philosopher Aristoteles. Here, the artist reports to use the term as a metaphor for what could be happening to our planet at this moment: going through a crisis and hopefully recovering from it.
