"Written Bodies" is a long-term project that began in 2005 from taking self-portraits of the unwanted scars on my body from an accident I was in. This led me to document people where the marks on their bodies are their choice. In my work, I strive to challenge the standards of thinking by exploring the less known. By going beyond what people see, and by showing the body, in all its forms - marked and unmarked - people may start to rethink their ideas of different and normal. Through photography, I document diverse cultures, people. and their rituals allowing me to tell a story with many voices. These are stories of others experiences that transcend pain and the cultural norm. I look closely at things, when some might look away. I see the individual and the characteristics of their body - their marks and scars on the surface. With this work, I want to give another idea of what normal is, by showing the beauty in the marked body.
