c-red-carpet

The project was organized around a trip aimed at retracing the current migration routes from China to the West. These routes faithfully reproduce the ancient northern branch of the Silk Road. The itinerary was developed around the concept of a double exchange: material and immaterial.

The physical realization of a patchwork carpet is intertwined with the human connections of an artist who experiences and shares the areas of everyday life with the citizens of two Chinese cities, Urumqi and Kasghar, located in the remote Xinjiang region.

The carpet, a multi-functional and polysemic object for the Uyghur people, is created by collective effort, and it's destined to become a physical and ideal place for dialogue and exchange. It's an object which witnesses a process of connection, in which a spontaneous and concrete network has managed to escape the regulations and controls of the Chinese dictatorship.
