Bridge
The character, played by myself, that is videoed within these spaces interacts in a way derived from my study into the works of James Joyce and Samuel Beckett. Characters in Beckett’s stories undertake seemingly pointless and repetitive tasks which are confined to set rules and constraints. A man walks from one place to another counting stones in his pocket, not realising if he picks up and counts the same one more than once, but starts counting again if he loses count. The short stories of Joyce trap characters in an endless progression of recurring optimism, which eventually leads to a circular journey of disappointment and a comprehension to the realities of existence. My video work attempts to represent these kinds of cyclical stories.
The videos are presented as repetitive, perceptive narratives on numerous flat and non-flat screen televisions; thus, giving a passage-way quality, assisting to the idea of cognitive repetition.
