Art As Activity
Deserting Reality should be the first show to introduce the participative art model of Art As Activity before I exhibit a solo participative art show in any other location. Art As Activity will produce new images through an instillation installed within the gallery. This instillation will ultimately display simple gestures taken from the exhibition's viewers in order to establish connections that exhibit direct reflections between the basic commonalities all humans share when preforming simple gestures we all can do. The simplicity of giving signatures, or sharing your thoughts on current issues of the day can easily be taken for granted. Human beings sign their names on a daily basis yet hardly think about it's importance through history or relevance as a method of verification that can be just as proficient as d.n.a. Participative gestures have the capacity to display these complexities within simple actions. It's the reason why I ask for signatures or answers to questions as a method of participation. The work earns gravitas because of the direct connection made by each participant.
The complete Art As Activity exhibition will be structured within the participative exhibition model that I have displayed below.
#1. Preparation/ Purchasing of materials and Instillation of the exhibition.
#2. Exhibition/ The exhibition is open for patron participation.
#3. Recording/ Digital photo & video documentation of the exhibition is recored for book and video merchandise as well as resource material for future use.
#4. Selling/ The selling of the artwork and recorded merchandise created from the exhibition.
Art As Activity will consist of four methods of Participative Art (Grid, Thoughts, Freestyle and Autograph.)(The work samples on this application will not be in the exhibition. The work samples are examples of what the pieces in Art As Activity could look similar too.) George will purchase most of the materials needed for the exhibition once he arrives in the city and is given the stipend allotted for the exhibition. The materials needed will be stretched canvases, oil sticks, paint pens and anything else needed for the exhibition. All the materials that will be used by the public will be safe for general use on the materials allowed within the exhibition space provided. The canvases will be displayed in a way that communicates the Art As Activity message through viewer participation while allowing patron traffic to comfortably flow throughout the exhibit space. The digital photography/video recording of Art As Activity should be periodically taken throughout the exhibition by designated to do so.
The selling and distribution of any artwork, recorded or manufactured merchandise produced through the exhibition will be structured under the usual selling practices of Celeste Prize.
The pieces created through our efforts will begin the next stage in experimental art beyond the action paintings of Hermann Nitsch exhibited in 2011. Participative art's relevance will be earned much like Duchamp's urinal, Warhol's brillo boxes or a koons sculpture, all of which were given that opportunity to gain relevance within their time. If executed as planned we should not only foster a pivotal event of relevance but establish ongoing experiences realized because of Art As Activity.
