‘Mandalas’

The circle has many symbolic meanings, from eternity or continuity to endless love and protection. The sun is represented by a circle with a dot in it and the collective physical elements of fire, air, water and earth are also commonly represented by a circle.
Mandalas (a Sanskrit word meaning ‘circle’) are used to focus attention during meditation They help to establish a sacred space which acts as an aid to meditation and trance induction. These concentric, circular diagrams have spiritual and ritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism, but are also universally recognized as being symbolic of peace and balance.
Although most mandalas exhibit radial balance and symmetry, this is not always the case, nor is this necessary to achieve focus during meditation.
Since the Mandala originated in Asia, these paintings are a nod of respect to the rich and diverse cultures of Asia, where meditation is virtually a way of life. I have taken the Mandala and interpreted it in a contemporary, free-spirited image. The image is strong, bold and inclusive, drawing the onlooker in and challenging him to reveal what he sees in it. If used for meditation, these Mandalas would have thousands of interpretations...
