After Midnight, morning come
Having consciously become aware of light falling on my bedroom walls, I started to vigilantly observe the shadows I fall asleep with at night and the shadows of the morning light that wakes me. The reflection of light through windows and trees has always been a gateway of wonder to me. Once I became aware of the changing yet persistent occurrence of shadows, I came to see this diffused and filtered world as an echo of the evanescent thoughts, emotions and movements of our lives. It is not shadows of myself I want to capture but rather the shadows that capture and reflect me and us in time.
My work has always been about the fleeting – the rushed and fragmented nature of our disconnected lives. By means of a process through which filtered light, as it moves across the blank canvas, is captured and translated into paint, I aim to register moments of silence, movement, flux, transition and change. The painted image becomes a ‘trace of the real’, refigured and retraced, yet at the same time reflective of a conscious moment when we become one with our surroundings.
