The red squirrel is the UK’s only native squirrel but its numbers have been in decline ever since its larger and more aggressive grey cousins were imported from North America in the 19th century. The problem has now emerged in Italy raising concerns in France and Switzerland. This digital photograph of a grey squirrel was taken in UK woodland and has been graphically enhanced to over emphasise the reddish/orange hues of the red squirrel and the potential loss of this beautiful creature across the European landscape.
