In Bloom
Commenced in 2008, In Bloom recounts the daily life of 13 Italian rainbow families, the story of their travels in Europe, U.S. and Canada and their struggle to have their rights recognised in Italy. This long, complex narrative has involved the Famiglie Arcobaleno (an Italian association that brings together Italian gay and lesbian families and fights for their rights), the Mario Mieli homosexual cultural association in Rome, and the Milk homosexual cultural association in Verona. It has also crossed national borders to reach Spain, where Eleonora Calvelli documented the civil marriages of four couples, and Denmark, where the photographer followed the attempt of a couple of young women to conceive at an assisted fertilization clinic.
The book
Curated by 3/3, the book on Italian families with same-sex parents has been published in 2013 by Postcart, with the title In Bloom. It is one of the first long-term photographic projects on LGBT families in Europe, and the first in Italy. The project, while referring to the Italian context and directly inspired by it, testifies the situation of LGBT rights in other countries through the journeys of the Italian families who got married abroad or have carried out the artificial insemination in Europe, Canada and U.S.
The project received the support of Amnesty International Italian section.
