When I began this painting, _the muse_ spoke to me and announced its name: The Place of Knowledge. The painting was still in its very early stages, and was to be largely painted from imagination. In most cases, I am looking for the title of a painting during the painting of it, until I finally settle on it. But in this case the name came first, and so I doubted it. So I tried out other names, which might have fit equally well. But during the course of the work, I had many experiences that centered around “knowing.” While I had originally envisioned a work that referred to inner-knowing, or self-knowledge (as reflected in the borrowing of certain Tibetan motifs,) this morphed into realizations of all sorts that were happening in my life at the time of the painting’s execution. Some of those, were enlightening, others were startlingly painful, and yet others dealt with the knowing and sharing of information that goes on in one’s personal sphere. Still another aspect of knowing goes to misunderstanding and the spreading of false information. All of this has gone into this work.
