Stills, 2014
Stills is a work about how the camera has blurred the fine line between fiction and reality, the personal and collective memory and 'high' and 'low culture'.
For a while I have been collecting stills from films, which have had an impact of my memory. I crop,re-photograph and re-edit these images until i have made them my own. For the series 'Stills', i have mixed images from my personal family albums and crops from films. The 9 images are a combination of images from my mother with film stills from Michelangelo Antonioni's 1961 La notte. By cropping and re-editing, all the images gain the same quality, making the original source of each images unclear. My mother becomes part of the film scene and vice versa.
With this work I do not only question how the camera manipulates our memory, but look at the notion of an icon and the cliches of the depictions of relationships.
