Defining borders is one of first marks of civilization; redefining borders evidences unrest and incivility. In the spirit of the past shows, Nationbuilding, Empire, and upcoming, Shelter; Drawing Borders seeks to confront the viewer in a social dialogue about national identity. Dividing the “territory” of the exposition space into east and west with the construction of two walls of tar-painted sandbags, the viewer passes through a kind of border-crossing between “us” and “them,” walking through the passage between the two walls.
