Along the Way (Lungo il Percorso)
I wanted to make an oil painting of this scene to compliment the recent acrylic version. I was interested in comparing the two media by creating two similar works in succession.
My conclusion is that the oil version allowed me to create an overall more luminous work, thanks to the use of varnishes, oils and transparencies.
In truth, the acrylic version of this painting came together very rapidly, while even the initial drawing of the oil version was troublesome. Sometimes it's like that with a painting: an easy start leads to a smooth finish, but a rough start guarantees that the painting will require more work to render to your satisfaction.
I think in this case I got caught in the boredom of repetition, and this definitely slowed down the work. The acrylic painting was very easy and fun to create. But under the best of circumstances, the oil rendition of this scene is more likely to last.
