Honey Ant Dreaming 091

Honey Ant Dreaming 091

Painting, Sacred / Mythological, Acrylic, 91x121.x3cm
This colourful and intricate work depicts our traditional Honey Ant Dreamtime story. It tells of the courtship of the Napaljarris/the Seven Sisters (Pleiades) by Jakamarra/the Rainbow Serpent (Orion).

The Seven Sisters became Honey Ants to teach the Rainbow Serpent a lesson in courtship. While Honey Ants are a delicacy, taking too many Honey Ants is bad for you and will make you ill.

The traditional icons and patterns I have included in this painting are many thousands of years old. Prior to the late 1960's when my family first started painting Dreatime Stories, they were only ever used in sandpaintings, rock art, body painting and artifacts.

I use my paintings to teach people about the culture and spirituality of my Australian Aboriginal heritage, which is the world's oldest continuous culture.
